Future-Proofing Film & TV Courses: Bridging the Gap Between Higher Education & Industry

Charis is the Course Leader for the MA Filmmaking course at London Film School. She is a UK-based Sound Designer and Educator. With a filmmaking career spanning over 30 years, she has worked with internationally recognised, award-winning filmmakers, animators, artists, and photographers.

She has also made significant contributions to film and sound education, having served in positions such as Programme Director, Senior Lecturer, Visiting Lecturer, and External Examiner for undergraduate and postgraduate Film Production, Television, and Journalism courses at institutions including the University for the Creative Arts, Southampton Solent University, Westminster University, University of Portsmouth, and Regents University.

Charis has served on various film festival judging panels, including Watersprite and the Women Over Fifty in Film Festival. Additionally, she has been an active member of the Executive Board of NAHEMI and is a member of the Audio Engineering Society Accessibility Sub-Committee and the International Moving Image Society Advisory Board.

As a Sound Designer, Charis has collaborated with accomplished artists and filmmakers such as Daria Martin, the 2018 Jarman Award winner, and Charlotte Prodger, the 2018 Turner Prize winner. Her ongoing collaboration with artist Michael Clark resulted in a retrospective group exhibition titled Tales from the Colony Room: Art and Bohemia at Dellasposa in 2020, featuring his tribute to Muriel Belcher, With Daughter on her Mind. Charis’s 2023 work with Professor Birgitta Hosea on her experimental animated installation piece Walkcycle was exhibited at the Hunan Museum in China. Her portfolio also includes fiction and documentary films and artists’ works, focusing on the representation of spaces on screen and the role of movement in sound.

Charis’s work as a Sound Designer has been showcased internationally, with her films screened at prestigious events such as the London Short Film Festival, Barcelona International Short Film Festival, Edinburgh Film Festival, Locarno Film Festival, Tate Modern, Quadrangle, Cannes Film Festival, Ann Arbour, Frightfest, and ScreamFest LA.

She holds an MA in Sound for the Screen from Bournemouth University, a PGCert in Creative Arts Education, is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and a Member of the Audio Engineering Society, the Institute of Professional Sound, and the International Moving Image Society.

With an award-winning career spanning television, radio and academia, Isabella brings a wealth of creative and strategic expertise to the IMIS Higher Education Panel.

As a former BBC Creative Director, she has worked across BBC1, BBC2, BBC3, BBC4, CBBC, CBeebies and all BBC Radio Networks – producing and directing content from live studio broadcasts to acclaimed Natural History productions.

A skilled music supervisor and classically trained musician, Isabella has commissioned original scores and sound design for major BBC dramas, documentaries and promotional campaigns. Her work in branding, storytelling and audience engagement has shaped the creative direction of some of the BBC’s most recognisable output.

Beyond broadcasting, Isabella has built a substantial career in higher education, leading teams of internationally acclaimed creatives and developing strategic communications that bridge the worlds of academia and industry. Known for her tact, diplomacy and inspirational leadership, she is passionate about nurturing emerging talent and driving excellence across creative disciplines.

Dr Muriel Tinel-Temple is Senior Lecturer in Film at the University of Roehampton. She has significant experience in designing and leading Film Production programmes at UG and PG level, and she currently leads the BAFTA albert education partnership at Roehampton. Her teaching includes a wide range of subjects, from contextual and theoretical topics to critical practice and production-based modules, specifically in non-fiction filmmaking. Her research and practice explore self-representation, experimental cinema, the essay film, eco-cinema, and sustainable modes of production. She sits on the executive board of NAHEMI (National Association for Higher Education in the Moving Image) and is a full member of IMIS (International Moving Image Society).

Phil is an experienced senior producer in live television, covering events, music, arts, science, history, and news. Formerly Head of Television Events at the BBC (2012–2019), he now works in freelance, consultancy, and trustee roles. He has been nominated for BAFTA, RTS, Grierson, and Emmy Awards, winning BAFTA and RTS accolades.

Aidan is a Film and Television Sound Supervisor and Re-recording Mixer with over 20 years’ experience. His work spans documentaries, dramas, films, and live sports for broadcasters including Warner Brothers Discovery, BBC, ITV, and Channel 4, as well as international outlets.
